Your desk is a pulpit

Marketplace ministry is the long obedience of doing excellent, honest work and aiming that work at the gospel.

The church has sometimes spoken as if the only sacred work happens on a platform. Scripture is less tidy. Lydia traded purple cloth and opened her house. Priscilla and Aquila made tents and guarded doctrine. The women in Luke 8 funded the travelling ministry of Jesus out of their own means. The marketplace was never a waiting room for real ministry. It was one of the places ministry already lived.

That is the invitation of this work. Position the business, the practice, the profession, as a tool for evangelism. Not by painting a verse on a van and calling it mission, but by the harder things: pricing that does not cheat, wages that are not delayed, contracts you can read aloud, excellence a neighbour can trust, and profit that has already been spoken for by the gospel.

Entrepreneurs and professionals do not need a second, more spiritual life beside their work. They need their work converted. Strategy, sales, hiring, and an ordinary Tuesday are not interruptions to devotion. Under the lordship of Jesus they are how devotion takes a body and walks into a city.

When a business is repositioned this way, it can carry more than its owner. It can carry a witness, a wage for other households, and a stream of resources toward the harvest.
